1999 Volkswagen Golf oil shortage

I have not detected any leakage however anytime I check the oil I could see a reduction, sometimes in just aout 250km I have to top it up with 1litre if the required maximum level is to e maintained. What is wrong and what should I do?

The oil level is not expected to stay at the highest mark on the dip stick. In fact, you'll see it doesn't say "add" and "full". It says "min" and max". All engines use some oil between oil changes. To address complaints from customers who didn't read that in the owner's manual, they use those designations on the dip sticks now. As long as the level stays above the "min" mark between oil changes, there is no need to add any.
