1. I need to know how economical is this car, some people say if its on D4 its fuel consumption is equal to a 1.5 litre capacity vehicle. How true is this?

2. If I am to replace the current engine (D4), which engine is compatible?

Your Corolla was rated around 30 mpg when it was new.

Why are you considering replacing the engine?

Most salvage yards have interchange manuals which tell them which engine will fit the transmission of the Corona (sorry, I referred to it as a Corolla earlier). Try your local salvage yard to see if they can check the manual for you.

Something to think about:
When changing the engine you'll have to consider if the car's computer is compatible with the new engine or if the computer will have to be changed as well.
