THE CRANKED BUT CUT OFF 2 TIMES UNTIL I TURNED ON THE AC & THE MOTOR IDLED HIGHER. DROVE FINE FROM THERE?

1999 Toyota Celica • 140,000 miles

Was test driving a 1999 Celica. Took three times to crank it and keep it started. The man I who owns it told me to turn the AC on. So I did and it cranked & stayed on and drove fine. I drove it about 6 miles. Parked it. Turned it off. Waited a few minutes. Cranked back with no problems. I opened the hood with the motor running and did not see any fluid leaks, etc.
What would make it do this?

Strange problem with the AC-try cleaning the idle air control valve and see what happens-start here-let me know
