1999 Pontiac Montana Will Start Tried Spraying Starting Fluid Still Start Does

It will not start, have tried spraying starting fluid but still will not start but it does have fire. We are not sure if it is fuel pump or maybe timing chain. Any ideas? We figure if was fuel pump would still be able to spray starting fluid & get it to start but will not.Thank you.
