1999 Mercury Villager Tranny Started Intermittently Want Reverse Does Seems

My tranny has started to intermittently NOT want to go in reverse. If it does go, it seems like it doesn't shift all the way into reverse, I give it more gas and it squeels the tires and "clunks" into reverse. Short of replacing the tranny is there anthing else I can try?
