Turn the key ahead one notch and you should be able to shift it.

Wrenchtech, will that work even if there is no battery hooked up. I had the positive cable on the car burn up yesterday and now when I try to hook up battery it shorts out. The car is in park so I can't move it out of the way

Wrenchtech, Someone said something about an electronic transmission ??? This is on my sons car, so I have to go to where he is and would like any advice I can get

No, it's just the shift interlock keeping it in Park. It's a safety feature so you have to step on the brake to shift it. Many of them also have a slot near the shifter to slip a key into to over ride the shift interlock too.
