1999 Lincoln Town Car. Was shifting from Reverse to Drive when the shift lever just seemed to slide around without catching any gear. Was able to get it in park, turned it off, and now it won't start at all. The battery is good and the dash lights all come on but the engine doesn't even try to start. The gear shifter still just seems to slide around and not catch into any gear.

Pretty obvious the shift linkage popped apart under the car. That's going to be a very inexpensive fix unless something tore out of the body due to rust. It sounds like the transmission is in reverse or drive. That's why the starter won't crank. The neutral safety switch prevents cranking and accidentally starting when it's in gear so you don't have to go running after the car.
