cut out on motorway

I have a Fiat punto van 1700 turbo diesel T reg.Took it out the other day...cut out on motorway and would not start! Towed back! Tried to start it but now it will not!! Timing belt seems to be intact; just seemed sluggish turning over.

What do you think the problem might be?
