1999 Dodge Ram Transmisson Out Let Cool Couple Minutes Will Drive Very Long

transmisson goes out and if I let it cool for a couple minutes it will drive but not very long maybe like a mile or two. Is the transmission completely gone or is there maybe another solution that is cheaper
