What can be making a clicking noise when turning?

The steering wheel only when 4 wheel drive is engaged on 99 silverado 1500? The noise is not present when in 2 wheel drive. It is a clicking or knocking sound.

Hi this could be a u joint in the front shaft.
the rod that locks the front axle as in worn shaft.

another possibility is the auto lock assembly. you really need to try and pinpoint exactly where the clicking is to determine which of these may be causing the noise.. thanks billymac

Thank you for your answer. I should have also mentioned that it is just the driver side. It also feels like it is metal grindind together when turning.

Hi i would also check the ball joints due to the grinding.
