1998 VW Passat leaks power steering fluid

MY VW HAS HAD A CREAK/MOAN (WE CALL HER MOANING MYRTLE BECAUSE OF THIS, ) WHILE TURNING FOR A LITTLE OVER THREE YEARS NOW, BUT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SUMMER IT STATED LEAKING STEERING COLUMN FLUID. The creaking sounds like the grudge on steroids and it leaks fluid so bad that I can't park on my own driveway because I was getting a stain. Buying fluid is getting too expensive, but it's still cheaper than the $600-$1000 estimate I was given to completely replace the rack and pinion. I was reading about this possibly being a leaky hose or something, but I'm not skilled enough in car knowledge to even know where too look without someone telling me. I was going to try to get it towed to a dealer/autoshop but I decided to hold off and see if it sounds like there could be another solution.

Troubleshooting noises over the net is hard to do without the vehicle-My advise is check the rack and pinion, power steering hoses and the pump itself to locate the leakage-
