rack and pinion 1\2 inch play hands @3 and 9

sounds like front end barrings but no play eccept in the rack and pinion with one tire off the ground or both steering wheel is locked

You can have a bad bearing and have no play in the bearing i have seen it many times.They start by just making noise.Does the noise change get louder or softer when making a lane change to the left or right?Also do you have a jack and jack stands?
