Pontiac Sunfire Starter Problem

My car has always started right up, instantly, now I have to try a few times and I hear a winding motor sound and it fades away then I try again same thing, but sometimes it still starts right up.I have people telling me it is the alternator and some saying it is the starter.no check engine lights, great battery.I was told by a mechanic at my work that it is the cylinoid (?) on the starter, so the starter needs replaced. If I can't make it to work I lose my job and only have a few extra to get this fixed, would really like to know which way to go and if possible what is a fair price to get repair done in Colorado.thank you.P.S. no clicking sounds or lights dimming when starting the car.
