1998 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2L OHV Engine, 4 Speed Automatic Transmission,
I have tried to get information on this problem before but was never given any answers that were related to this problem so I am going to start over.

When I originally started working on this car the Service Engine Light was on. I attached my Diagnostic Tool. This is the information that I retrieved.

Fault Code P0335, Crankshaft Position Sensor/ Crankshaft Position Sensor, Bank 1, A Circuit. I did a voltage on the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor, I had 12V feeding it. The sensor seemed to be OK, But since was only about $10, I decided to change it out any way. I also check of the electrical connections that are attached to any part of the engine. I cleared the Fault Code.

I started it up and seem to be running fine, so I took it for a drive and after about 15 minutes when I stop at stop light and started to take off it started missing until the engine reached close to 2000 rpms then it smoothed out and ran fine as long as I was moving. Also when this happened the Check Engine Light came back on. I pulled over and pulled the Fault Code. There was still the same Fault Code, but this time it read Code P0335, Crankshaft position Sensor, Bank 1, A circuit. I have friend that has Cavalier with the same 2.2L OHV engine. He let me borrow his Ignition Control Module and coil pack.

After installing it I cleared the code and took the car for another drive with the same results except this time there was no (Bank 1) on my code reader. Next without clearing the code I started the car back up and kept driving it. The car kept running worse until it would completely stall out when I tried to take off from a stop light. I pulled over and hooked up my code reader. Now there was another Fault Code there, I forgot to right the number for this fault, but it read that there was a problem with the Camshaft Position Sensor as well.

A person going by hmac300 suggest that I check out the fuel system, it did not make any since to me, but I did it any way.

First I pulled the throttle assembly and cleaned it good with coke cleaner including the IAC port. I checked all of the vacuum lines and connections for bad spots. I pulled the fuel pressure regulator cleaned it and the screen. I installed a new fuel filter. I check the resistance at the fuel injectors, all were well with in the normal operating range. Next I plumbed in my pressure gauge into the inlet side of the fuel rail. My results are as follows.
Ignition on priming cycle: 44 psi Should be 41 to 47 psi It should hold a pressure of 36 to 42 psi for 10 minutes. It only lost 3 psi down to 41 psi after 15 minutes.
Started engine, cold at an idle the pressure was 40 psi After engine warmed at an the pressure was 39 psi It should be 31 to 44psi

I restricted the fuel at the return line I stopped when it got to 60 psi so I would not damage the fuel pump.
I removed the vacuum line from the pressure regulator, the went up to 49 psi and stayed there until vacuum line was reconnected went back to 39 psi The pressure should increase by 3 to 10psi.
Car in gear brake on Rpm at about 2000 pressure was 44 psi

Cleared codes Started car with the brake on and in gear increase rpm to about 2000 rpm until the engine check light came and held it there while keeping an eye on the fuel pressure at that point it never drop from 44 psi except for a very slight flutter in the because the engine was running rough.

At that point shut the engine off and pulled fault codes again. And again there was a fault code that read, P0335, Crankshaft Position Sensor, A Circuit.
By the way when I idle the engine back down the miss goes away until I try increase the RPM's.

The manuals that are available these days are not very good and I am still trying to find out what the values should be concerning the ignition system. If any body has an idea about what's going on, please let me know. Steven
