1998 Mercury Sable V6 3 0l Engine Running Idles Fine Shifted Reverse Drive

I have a 1998 Mercury Sable V6 3.0L. When the engine is running it idles fine. When shifted to reverse or drive the engine bogs down and dies. What could be causing this problem?
