Hi, I have a 1998 mazda millenia, 124k miles, anyway I have known that the oxygen sensor has been bad for awhile now. The check engine light has been on for years now. I have just ignored it. I really dont want to invest anymore in this car. Anyway I have known that the oxygen sensor has been bad for awhile now. Anyway the other day I was driving 55 mph on the highway and the check engine light started flashing. There was a shift in the car when this happened. I had something like this happen before and it was a cylinder misfire according to the diagnostic computer check I did. Got a tune up and it was fine after that. What could this be a catalytic converter issue, oxygen sensor issue?

Yes, having ignored a faulty O2 sensor for a few years, which would result in either an over-rich or overly lean condition, or maybe both at different times, you could very well be causing serious damage to the catalytic converter.
