What damage could have been caused but my engine overheating?

Blown head gasket which lets coolant into oil. That will damage the bearings as well.

There's no mixture of oil and water, just the sound of valves tapping. Could there be anything else?

Could still be a head gasket. A leak down test will confirm.

Have the oil pressure manually checked.
