What is meant by transmission engagement? How do you tell when a transmission is engaged? Will the car move slightly or make a sound like a motor is spinning?

when engaged in gear by shift handle selector the car should respond to the gas pedal push by moving and not just the motor spinning freely. check fluid level in trans and check that shift linkage/cable is functioning to move transmission arm into gear.
