Honda Accord Coolant Problem

Please tell me proper procedure when car needs water or antifreeze in radiator after it runs hot.

a 50/50 mix of anti and water added to coolant system but what caused car to over heat?

Forgot to put the cap back on the radiator.Drove maybe 20 miles, stopping when the register showed over heating, and letting it cool before contuing on , and had to do that for like 4-5 miles of the journey home. What I needed to know is don't you need to let the radiator cool completely before adding the 50/50 mix of water and coolant to keep from cracking the block? What is the rule on that?

As long as the engine has cooled down to below 70 degrees Celcius, it should be ok to add coolant.
