1998 Geo Metro battery light comes on

1998 Geo Metro 4 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 91,000 miles. I just installed a new battery a couple of days ago and now my battery light comes on in my car. What could be the problem?

Get a voltmeter and read the open battery voltage on the battery before you start it up, it should be 12.4 volts or higher, less recharge battery. Now, start it up and read battery voltage should be 13.5 - 15.5 volts with headlights and heater on. If not it could be the alternator again not putting out or the battery is not taking the charge. Or the field generation from the computer
