Popping /thud/sound like a misfire

Popping /thud/sound like a misfire. When in park I can rev the engine up to red line fast/slow hard/soft with no issue. Engine seems fine. Put the truck in drive and under hard accel I get the pop or thud. Sounds like drivers side near the floor board. I tried a brake torque ( foot hard on the brake while giving it gas) and it also popped/ thud. Scratching my head on this one.

Never red line the motor. Not made to do this with the age and mileage.

Does it feel like a backfire?

Yes. I let off and it is fine. Seems to be only on hard accel in drive. I didn't take I all the way to red line just up to about 4K. Again no issue while in park.

I would look at some basics like plugs/coils. How old are they?

About 3-4 years old. Just changed the wires. I would think if it were engine related I would get the sound in park also.
