When driving recently (after getting a new battery and passing an electrical test) my 1998 Ford Escort it died on me. I was able to restart it; however, it made a loud grinding sound. As I was driving it back home, it continued to have the grinding sound and would not accelerate past 20 mph? I can't afford a large repair...I was hoping this car would last me one more year. Could you please help? Thank you!

Do you have a check engine light on and when was the last tune-up?

Lack of acceleration, chugging, hesitating********,bogging, misfiring etc. could be caused by one of the following below

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it and keep testing.
