1998 Ford Contour Repair Question

Black canister
I have a 1998 ford contour 4 cyl. Underneath the battery tray is a lage black canister with a piece of hose sticking out of it. what is this for and where does the hose go to?

it's probably your cannister for fuel vapor. pic enclosed.
