I just bought the truck and after driving about a quater mile it starts choking out and bogging down and cutting out and backfiring under the hood. The only fuel filter it has is in the fuel pump. It has no catalytic converter. What can the problem be?

Is the check engine light coming on? If it is, have the computer scanned to identify trouble codes. Most parts stores will do it for free. Once you get that, you should have a good idea where the problem is coming from.
