1998 dodge avenger will just shut down while driving and lose all power then can usually start back up in a few minutes

Start by having any diagnostic fault codes read. Many auto parts stores will do that for you for free. Common causes are a failing camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor. They often become heat-sensitive and will start working again after they cool down.
