1998 Dodge Avenger Repair Question

My friend cut the wires for the Overdrive switch and now it won't shift past 3rd gear, I taped the wires back, but it didn't help. can this be fixed?
2.5liter v6,4spd auto. shifts fine from 1st to 3rd. It shifted fine before this. the O/D off light doesn't come on the cluster no matter which way the button is pushed.

why did he cut the wires?? there are codes in the system and have them checked and get back to us.
did you re attach them??

He cut them because he wanted to get the button out of the shifter and thought that was how to do it, and yes i did tape the wires back together but it didn't fix it. I had it scanned for codes and none came up.

was the switch check to be ok? solder the wires don't just twist and tape.
