Help please It will start but not turn over and stay running I recently have just got a 98 cavalier. Its been sitting up for a year with a bad fuel pump. I've changed the pump and got rid of all the bad gas. Got it running, filled it up and put seafoam in the tank. Drove it for about 50 miles, ran good no problems. The next day it wouldn't turn over, tried giving it gas. It would turn over but only for couple seconds then just die. There's no vaccum seal on the air filter. The exhust sounds like its pooting and doesn't smell like it should. Spark plugs are good. I'm getting a O2 sensor. Any advice would be help full.

Scanfor codes and check fuel pressure first. Don't replaceparts in a guessing game it's only exspensive and won't fix the problem. Make sure your battery is charged then have it checked, it may be bad. Here is the starting circuit attached. Check the fusible link as well as ignition switch. The relay as shown may or may not be on your car.

My dad took my computer off my car and water poured out of it. I now have a brand new computer from the dealership installed. Sounds 100% better when we try to start it. But it won't turn over. Tried to resart the computer unhooked the batteries for 15 mintues, hooked it tried it the same thing. So we turned the key till the dash lights came on along with my headlights. Closed the door and waited another 15 minutes the same thing once again. Did it that away couple more times. Already changed ignition and lock siwtch.

The computer will take care of itself as you drive the car. What you really mean is the car will not turn over to run. You have to check your battery and starter system for that. Try hitting a h ammer on the BODY of the starter. If it starts your starter is bad. Make sure your battery is charged after the car is started go to an auto parts store/sears/firestone etc and have tehm check the battery. Pic included.

Also you can check the system with the first answer I gave you with that chart. Make sure the fusible link is good going to starter relay.
