How to tell if I need to replace the thermostat

I have a 1998 chevy cavalier ls 2.2 it will overheat and the coolant will boil out of the surge tank and it also will make a gurgling noise?

yes, you could need a new thermostat the symptoms match. it's a relatively cheap fix to try. if it gurgles cold when it is full then you may have gasket issues.

it only does the gurgling when its hot like if I drive some where that is like ten mins away I will shut the car off and i will hear the gurgling noise also if the car idles it will get real hot.
