Car overheating is it a head gasket or water pump

I would have a block test performed, for the presence of combustion gases in the cooling system. This will be the do-all, end-all, for what needs to happen next. I doubt that it is the water pump that has failed, unless it is a gross leak, or the drive belt is missing.
