1998 Cadillac Concours Repair Question

Topics covered: Engine, Noise, Crankshaft.
Mileage: 130,000 miles.

Asked on November 10, 2011

The crankshaft pulley is sticking out further than all the other pulleys and the belt has come off.

Went to start the engine and heard a squealing noise. Turned off motor and found the belt had come off. Looked over the engine to find all the pulleys were aligned but the crankshaft pulley is out 1/4 inch more than all others. The engine starts fine with no noise at all. Is the problem the harmonic balance / dampener.

Pls Help
Terry.

theres probably a set screw to keep it in line and tite! take ablock of wood put it against the harmonic balancer & try to tap it back into place. check 4 aset screw if you find one tighten it up replace the belt and see if that works for you?

Never heard of or seen a set screw on the vibration damper. Suspect it has broken the rubber insert between the hub and outer ring. On many dampers, the pulley is the outer ring. The only fix for a broken rubber insert is to replace the entire assembly. The parts stores have catalogs listing hundreds of dampers because this is a fairly common problem.
