Have a '98 Buick Century. It is very difficult to turn. Sometimes makes clicking noise. How bad is it?

Daugther has the car at college and basically claims she can't turn. Some guy at school told her it could be the steering geer and it is very expensive to get fixed. I am 150 miles from her and need to know whether or not it is worth fixing? And is it safe for her to drive home?

Hi this could be a pump or a rack and pinion neither one is too expensive but it has to be diagnosed as one or the other.
A rack could cost 300-500 to repair pump 150-250.
I am sorry but I cannot say there is no danger in driveing it if you have a steering prob of any kind there is a certain amount of danger. Now I am not saying that maybe mom or dad can't drive it home or someone with more experience.

Hope this helps
