1998 Buick Century/143K miles/garaged every night: recently/sporadically dies immediately on starting;takes several attempts to get it running, usually by holding down gas peddle. This week without warning on starting it in AM, it idled very roughly. After some miles, idle became more normal, but now 'service engine light' is on. Afraid to venture far from home, but need car for work. Are the above two symptoms related? I take good care of my car.

Have the trouble codes checked. Some of the national brand autostores used to check codes for free. How long since a tune-up? Use a gage and check fuel pressure. Not only check for correct pressure, check that the pressure doesn't drop like a rock with pump turned off. Some of the national brand autostores will loan out a fuel pressure gage.

Clean throttle-body and check iac/idle air control.
