How true is it that holding down the brake while the drive in on affects the transmission?

While driving in a traffic hold up brake is always applied while the gear is on drive. Does this affect the transmission system? I am told it's better to always leave it on neutral and hold the brake or simply put it on park 'cos leaving it on drive and holding the brakes affects the transmission.
