Hi my wife's Micra again. . have checked water pump and alternator belts, both tensioned correctly. Have located noise as coming from bell housing, assuming it could be thrust bearing. Only question is: noise continues even if clutch pedal is depressed. . Also noise is gone for awhile after starting and then returns. Am I correct in assuming that the thrust bearing is on the way out?

The next thing to check is does the transmission have the right amount of gear oil. And its the correct kind for a 97 Nissan. If all this checks out then its probably the thrust bearing.

A fair assumption that the thrust is failing, often you can feel a slight vibration through the pedal when it is depressed, i would also be checking that the trans oil is correct as well.
