1997 Nissan Altima Repair Question

I have a 1997 Nissan Altima(5-speed) that whenever I downshift, or slow down, the car wants to die out. I can usually "pop" the clutch and rev the motor a little to keep ot running. What do you think the problem is?

look for obvious vacuum leaks or a possible failed idle speed control motor.
