1997 Mercury Cougar Repair Question

Rpms go high but velocity wont match, smells burnt or overheats easy.
I changed the hose because it blew up last night but tonight it showed me the low coolqnt twice after i had already filled it up twice. The rpma go up to 4000 but velocity is 50-55 mph and feels like a lot less.

Sounds like a slipping clutch, is this auto or manual?

How does the trans oil look? red, or dark and smells off or burnt?
