I can start my car but when I put it into gear it shuts off.What is the cause of this?

My wife was backing out of the drive way and the car was in reverse. the car shut off. She put it back in park started the car again and put it into drive. the car shut off again. It will start and stay on but the moment we put it into any gear it shuts off.
