Honda Accord Thermostat Problem

1997 Honda Accord 2.2 L, bought this car used I knew they had problems wit overheating but I figured I could figure out the problem. My concern now is that it may have cracked head/ gasket no white smoke and the oil level although a little high hasn't seem to have gained anymore. I changed out the thermostat flushed the engine idled rough new plugs and wires it seems as if thermostat is not opening, also think timing is off a little, I think they had the water pump changed out box in trunk with old pump. Why still overheating i'm stumped!!!!!!!!

When does the overheating occur?
Do you need to keep topping up coolant?
Are the cooling fans working?
