1997 GMC Jimmy Brake lites

I seent t a post with the same problem that I have, top brake lite works but the bottom does not work. Mechanic is telling me I have to buy some lind of box inside the steering column.I, m on disability can, t afford it. What should I do first, any advise.

He may be talking about the multi function switch meaning when you hit the brake the power doesn't go through it to activate the lights. That is the way the system works.

Can you tell me whee this is found so I can check it to see if it is bad, and do you know how much this will cost me approx. If I have to replace it. Thanx for the imput. He was saying it could cost somewhere around two hundred dallars. Is this correct.

The multifunction switch is the turn signal switch/cruise, wiper etc. And he is probably right about cost.
