Replace oil pump

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

4.2L Engine

1. Raise and support the front of the vehicle.

2. Drain the engine oil and dispose.

3. Remove the oil filter.

4. Remove the six oil pump bolts, then remove the oil pump drive gear, the oil pump driven gear, the oil pump O-ring and the oil pump itself. Discard the used oil pump O-ring.

5. Inspect the oil pump components for damage or excessive wear.

6. Check the oil pump face for warpage with a flat edge ruler. The face cannot exhibit more than 0.00157 in. (0.04mm) of distortion.

7. Remove the plug over the oil pressure relief; valve.

8. Remove the oil pressure relief valve ball and spring, then clean the parts.

To install:

Lubricate the parts with clean engine oil before assembly.

9. Assemble the oil pressure relief valve ball and spring with a new plug.

10. Install the oil pump, along with a new O-ring, the oil pump driven gear and the drive gear. Install and tighten the six oil pump mounting bolts to the torque value specifications indicated in the illustration.

11. Apply a film of clean engine oil to the rubber O-ring on the new filter, then install the filter onto the filter mount.

12. Install the oil pan drain plug.

13. Lower the vehicle.

14. Fill the engine with the correct amount and type of new engine oil.

15. Start the engine and make certain that the oil light on the instrument panel extinguishes within 6-8 seconds after the engine starts.

4.6L and 5.4L Engines

1. Remove the timing chain.

2. Remove the oil pan.

3. Remove the three oil pump screen and cover bolts, then remove the screen and cover.

4. Remove the oil pump screen and cover spacer.

5. Remove the four oil pump mounting bolts, then remove the oil pump from the engine.

To install:

6. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces.

7. Install the oil pump and loosely install the four oil pump mounting bolts. Tighten the four oil pump bolts in the sequence shown to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).

8. Install the oil pump screen and cover spacer to 15-22 ft. Lbs. (20-30 Nm).

9. Install the oil pump screen and cover, then install the three oil pump screen and cover bolts. Tighten the bolts near the oil pick-up screen to 15-22 ft. Lbs. (20-30 Nm) and the bolts at the opposite end of the pick-up to 70-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).

10. Install the timing chains, then install the oil pan.

5.8L and 7.5L Engines

1. Remove the oil pan.

2. Remove the oil pump inlet tube and screen assembly.

3. Remove the oil pump attaching bolts and remove the oil pump gasket and intermediate driveshaft.

To install:

4. Before installing the oil pump, prime it by filling the inlet and outlet port with oil and rotating the shaft of the pump to distribute it.

5. Position the intermediate driveshaft into the distributor socket.

6. Position the new gasket on the pump body and insert the intermediate driveshaft into the pump body.

7. Install the pump and intermediate driveshaft as an assembly. Do not force the pump if it does not seal readily. The driveshaft may be misaligned with the distributor shaft. To align it, rotate the intermediate driveshaft into a new position.

8. Install the oil pump attaching bolts and tighten them to 12-15 ft. Lbs. (16-20 Nm) on the 4.9L engine and to 20-25 ft. Lbs. (27-34 Nm) on the 5.8L and 7.5L engines.

6.8L Engine

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the engine front cover and crankshaft sprocket.

3. Remove the oil pan.

4. Remove the three oil pump mounting bolts, then remove the oil pump from the engine.

To install:

5. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces.

6. Install the oil pump and loosely install the oil pump mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 71-106 inch lbs. (8-12 Nm).

7. Install the oil pan.

8. Install the crankshaft sprocket and timing chains.

9. Install the front cover.

7.3L Diesel Engine

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Remove the radiator.

3. Remove the drive belt.

4. Remove the crankshaft damper.

5. Remove the oil pump retaining bolts.

6. Remove the oil pump housing and square cut O-ring.

To install:

7. Install the oil pump housing and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. Lbs. (19 Nm).

8. Install the crankshaft damper.

9. Install the drive belt.

10. Install the radiator.

11. Connect the negative battery cable.
