Sounds like the cam has gone bad or some component that actuates the valve like the lifter or rocker arm. The cam is usually what goes and it is often refered to as, "wiped".

Unfortunately, this is best remedied by rebuilding the motor as the metal from the cam has shortened the life of the motor. Replacing the cam is a patch.
The next time you change your oil, look for metal in the bottom of the drain pan.
