Is it safe to drive.? very scared
single mother low income !!1997 ford escort wagon. lurching forward high idol and blinking engine light??? is it safe to drive

missfiring, and maybe vacuum leaks. get it checked now to find out the issue

thank you. i had my sons friend come by a few weeks ago because the engine light was on and he said it was the esr valve? but no safety issues untill i can get it fixed but now last night i did not think i was gonna make it home from work it also smelt like something was burning i have to get to work i have no money can i drive it?.

not the way you describe it. have him come back over and look again.

Symptoms indicates the engine is most probably misfiring and causing the catalytic converter to overheat. It is best not to drive under such conditions to avoid further damage
