Had to replace the neutral safety switch on my '97' Ford Crown Vic XL and since then sometimes it will start and sometimes it won't. Also sometimes will not shift out of 2nd gear. I installed it with the word neutral and that line lined up with the notch on the ring of the switch while transmission was in park. Should the transmission have been in neutral and how precise is the adjustment on the switch? How can I fix these two problems?

The adjustment to align the marks need to be in neutral. Be sure to align the marks as exact as you can get them. If the adjustment is off, it can cause all kinds of problems.

You need to have them aligned.
