Shift cable to change the gears correctly

I have 97 Chevy Tahoe just replaced the trans, shift cable neutral safety switch and steering column and I can not get the new shift cable to change the gears correctly now Tahoe in shop and they are playing guessing games can u help

That is a two piece assmebly and alot of times there is a little piece that falls out that lets the two lock together. It is on the cable coming from the inside of truck. Check with a dealer they may be able to get it for you. Without it it won't line up right or shift right.
