what causes the motor to shut off when you turn on the air conditioner, heater or defrost?

This afternoon I started the van and it was running fine. I turned on the defrost and it made a squeeling noise and as I was driving the engine shut off. Turned the defrost off and the van will run fine, but as soon as you turn it back on it boggs the motor down.
