1997 Chevrolet Astro Repair Question

What causes the motor to shut off when you turn on the air conditioner, heater or defrost?
This afternoon I started the van and it was running fine. I turned on the defrost and it made a squeeling noise and as I was driving the engine shut off. Turned the defrost off and the van will run fine, but as soon as you turn it back on it boggs the motor down.

the ac compressor may be locking up as it comes on with the defroster and may be seizing. have it checked to verify.
