Why can I smell gas when I open the sunroof or windows?

The smell of gas when the sunroof is opened and or windows in a 97 bmw 318ti. No smell of gas when windows are closed also no smell of gas outside the vehicle.

You must have external leak? Any dripping on ground when parked? Any smell when you leave /enter car?

No dripping on the ground. When I exit the vehicle there is no smell, also no smell inside. It's only when I open the sunroof. I stood close to the gas tank/ cap and the smell is not as strong as when I open the sunroof. It's weird.

Must be some kinda leak or venting going on somewhere. Does everyone smell it or are you sorta sensitive in that way?

Everyone smells it. It's gone as soon as the roof is closed

No it doesnt. What I noticed is that when all three are opened the smell tends to disappear after a while. When I open the sunroof on it's own, instantly you can smell the gas.

An inspection of the fuel lines and vapor lines and return lines is in order.
