Hi my toyota avalon 1996 stopped accelerating while on the freeway home yesterday, after waiting a few minutes on the side of the road it ran again but stopped accelerating a few more times untill it was push the last three miles home. oil was severy low or out and was added, transmission fluid appeared to be fine but more was added. Car will only move in reverse now. Never stopped running but will not move forward. Is this problem always a major transmission issue. My check engine light has been on for two years and is from the EGR. Please advise

Have the computer scanned again to see if there are additional trouble codes. Also, how low was the transmission? Have you checked the linkage to the trans to make sure nothing has come apart?

It could be something serious or something dealing with a sensor or the computer. Let me know what you find.
