I just bought a 1996 mitsubishi 3000gt vr4 and sometimes when I put it into reverse it makes a grinding noise and the car won't move so I have to put it in neutral and push it. Do I need a new transmission or is it something else? Also would it be an expansive fix?

Get the clutch checked and ensure that the transmission oil is ok, start here.

If all of the forward gears are ok then you have a trans problem. That car is an all wheel drive thing which makes any transmission work an expensive fix. If not still not cheap as a rebuild is likely in order. Generally about 1500 to 2000 dollars in my experience
