1996 Honda Accord 96 Accord Now Drove Friends House Went Park Car Running Good

I have a 96 Honda Accord, now I drove it to a friends house then we went to a park and the car was running good. After when we went to leave this is where my problems began. The car didn't want to shift into a higher gear, the check engine light came on and it over heats if you try driving it .....what can it be? Oh it's an automatic.
