1996 GMC 3500 st0p light switch

I am having the same problem as Gwh did in Aug 2007. And am at my wits end. I tried for three hours, but am unable to find any position that will allow me to access and remove the retainer. It is now badly mangled from my effort, but still will not come off of the shaft. I don't favor pulling the steering column as GWH did, but if that is what is required I will proceed. Is there anything else you could recommend in order to access this switch? If pulling the steering gear is the best move please advise proper procedure.

Thanks in advance, CEH

You might have to pull the steering column to get at it-

Remove or Disconnect
Negative battery cable.
Disable SIR.
Retainer from brake pedal pin. Use snap ring pliers.
Switch by unsnapping from pushrod.
Electrical connector from switch.
Install or Connect

Electrical connector into switch.
Switch by snapping it onto pushrod.
Retainer onto brake pedal pin. Use 11mm (7/16 inch) socket to push new clip on pin.
Negative battery cable.
Enable SIR.
